As part of its Health Care Transformation Strategy, the BC Ministry of Health has funded a system of approach to improve local health services called Primary Care Networks (PCNs). The Oceanside PCN has been created to improve access to primary medical relationships in our area, linking residents to a local network of health care professionals. One of the PCN projects was to open an NP led medical clinic in Qualicum Beach.

Our History
Flowerstone Health Society (FHS) was founded in 2019 by four local Nurse Practitioners and a Physician who saw an opportunity for clinicians and community members to work together and contribute to the design, governance, and support of this new NP led clinic.

Since then, FHS has expanded to include Oceanside residents as both members of the society, and as sitting board members, looking to play an active role in the growth of our local health system. Following the lead of organizations like the “Perfect Storm Group”, FHS sees an opportunity to seek out grants and donations from businesses, community members, and municipalities to support a local approach to providing quality primary care.

Our Vision
FHS’s Vision is to work with our membership and community partners to develop additional medical clinics. These clinics are to serve as an individual’s “Medical Home”, opened to serve those who don’t already have a family physician or nurse practitioner, or for those who may have difficulty accessing conventional medical care.
Our Values
The FHS Values and Guiding Principles look to support an approach that is both responsive and inclusive, and with the flexibility to evolve through experience. Living by our values takes deliberate effort, reflection, communication, and an attitude of humility. They were developed to harbour a culture of growth, where the organization learns from both mistakes and successes.

Our Guiding Principles
Empower local decision making that responds to community needs wherever possible. Be inclusive of all providers and partners. Respect all providers and ensure they are involved in decisions that will affect them. Support connections to other services/resources/providers where appropriate. Embed a trauma informed and culturally safe approach to delivering care. Engage patients meaningfully and incorporate their feedback to improve primary care. Ensure care delivery respects and meets the needs of providers and patients. Acknowledge and build on the strong foundation of previous local, regional, and provincial work and existing structures. Support local conversations with community partners and employees, before escalating to a higher level.
